Some Airing... In Tse's Some Airing...an oversized propeller hangs low in the center of a bunker, blocking the entrance, rotating lethargically and filling the space with a sense of uneasiness. Tse's installation both represents the gradual suffocation of the everyday life and proposes a method of mediating this banality. While Some Airing...conceptually freshens the air, it also speaks to Kinmen's stagnancy and solemnity resulting from years of imposed military presence. Yellow MountainSite: Tashan Battery No.1 Bunker's Arsenal In the arsenal behind the propeller-bunker is a vertical projection of Yellow Mountain (featuring the Yellow Mountains) in black and white with what appears to be a sun rising slowly from behind the landscape that is later revealed to be a balloon. This backdrop provides comic relief and atmospheric perspective in an otherwise oppressive environment. Su-Mei Tse was born in 1973 in Luxemburg to a Cantonese father and English mother, and now lives between Luxemburg and Paris. In 2003 she represented the Luxemburg Pavilion for the countrỳs first Venice Biennale and stunned the art world by winning the Golden Lion Award with Air-conditioned. Trained as a cellist prior to attending art school, Tse has experimented in a range of artistic disciplines including music, photography, video and dance. |
