Soft Target Perhaps the only exhibition gallery world-wide situated in a minefield, Wang Jian Wei's Soft Target lines the interior of the host bunker and all objects inside with a skin of white sponge. Through a single passageway, the visitor enters the once cold, hard and hostile shelter that has been transformed into a soft and comforting womb-like space. Born in 1958 in Sichuan province, China, Wang Jian Wei currently lives in Beijing. Wang decided to become an artist after being assigned to work at the Sichuan Painting Academy as a handyman. Wang quickly gained wide critical acclaim after winning the highest award at the Chinese National Art Exhibition for a realist painting portraying the Vietnam War. He is now one of China's most important contemporary artists. Wang has participated in the Shanghai, Gwangju and Venice Biennials, and Documenta. He works in a variety of media including painting, performance, theater and film; his latest film was featured at the Autumn Festival at the Pompidou Centre. |
