YAO Chien

Listen! Who is Singing?
Site: Nanshan Fortification under the banyan tree and arsenal

BMoCA is Yao Chien's first exhibition. In Nanshan battlefield under a sprawling banyan tree, Yao Chien brings a karaoke machine for the residents of Kinmen to sing popular love songs that, Yao believes, has the ability to "weave us together and become rituals, enter memories, travel across mountains and seas." The power of pop culture-and pop music-assures this work's resonance with contemporary youth.

A Taiwanese-born lyric writer, Yao Chien is currently the general manager for EMI Records, Taiwan and Virgin Music China. He has penned hundreds of pop songs, including the vastly popular Much-hyped Song about Love by Elva Siu, At Least I Have You by Sandy Lam, DiDaDi by Coco Lee, Taste by Winnie Shin and I'm Willing by Wang Fei. Having promoted many performers to stardom, Yao's lyrics and career speak the distinctive language of a generation.
